Which course did you attend and when? 


I attended the Senior Management Programme at IIM Calcutta, a satellite education certificate programme that is offered through the NIIT Imperia platform, from October 2010 to November 2011.

What is your background?

I completed my M.Sc in Chemistry from Kanpur University after which I joined GlaxoSmithKline and have continued here for the past 18 years.

What were your key learnings from the course? 


We were taught different kinds of strategies that can be applied in our workplace during decision making. When I was a functional manager in the sales and marketing department, I believed my department was the most important. During the course, I got an operational overview of various processes that make a business what it is. It was a great opportunity to network with peers from all over the country at that level. All of their experiences, clubbed with the managerial case studies that we were exposed to through the course, made for better decision-making and more enterprise thinking.

What did you like about the course?

It helped that we learnt overall business management instead of just focusing on one aspect. That way we got to see what binds a business together. We got to learn the latest techniques and theories of management from an excellent faculty and our peers who contributed with their experiences. The course was very well structured and I got to incorporate my own experience with the learning. Apart from that, it was great to have the opportunity to learn more about finance and economics from the best in the country, which only raised our  confidence level.

What did you not like about the course?

Six classes per subject are not enough for some of the subjects, especially finance. The restricted number of classes caused some of the lessons to be rushed through, which left some concepts unclear. Also, it became difficult to clear doubts in a class with more than 200 students.
